I had a curry with Shi and Kriss and asked them a few questions.
What is the Monster Mesh?
Monster Mesh boxes are small contraptions that talk to each other and relay audio. When you speak into one box, every box repeats the sound.
What problem does Monster Mesh try to solve?
We were inspired to develop the boxes because we were so frustrated trying to set up Skype to talk with Shi's Grandma in Singapore. Connecting a tablet to a wifi router and then installing and setting up Skype is really hard. All we wanted to do was talk, so we built a simple box to do that.
Thinking about it we realised that we could create a network to connect whole communities at risk of social isolation and started trialling our boxes in homes for older people.
How does it work?
The Monster Mesh boxes come pre-programmed. Once it's assembled you just switch your box on and it will connect to any other boxes nearby. There's no need for a wifi router or a connection to the internet and its free.
What else could this technology do?
We're not sure, please tell us! The great thing about mesh networks is that everyone can join in, they just need to be close to another box. It's a really natural and understandable way to create a community where everyone's invited.
